Digital Digressions:

Questions from my listeners' email

Settings for multiple monitors

Jim from DuBois, PA, watches my national radio show live with his Kim's Club membership. He has a Windows 7 computer with an Nvidia GeForce 210 graphics card. He connected the card's HDMI port to his HDTV so he could watch streaming Internet shows. However, all he sees on the TV is a blank desktop. He wants to know what he's doing wrong.

That actually sounds like things are working fine, Jim. By default, Windows 7 extends the desktop to a second monitor rather than duplicating it, which is what you were expecting.

Try dragging a program window to the right side of your computer's monitor to see what I mean. The window should appear on the TV. You can easily drag programs back and forth between the two.

The upside to this is you can drag the browser playing your video to your TV and make it full screen. However, you can still use your computer for other tasks.

Still, if you want to duplicate the display instead, right-click on the desktop and click Screen Resolution. Select your TV from the monitor icons and under Multiple Displays, choose Duplicate Displays. Hit Apply and the screens will switch to duplicate mode.

Streaming online video is a great alternative to paying for expensive cable. Here are some ways to go about it.

Monitor your aging parent

Lucille from Honolulu, HI, listens to my national radio show on KIKI 990 AM. Her aging mother is having trouble living on her own. There have been a few falling incidents and some confusion. While she's deciding what to do, Lucille wants to know whether there is an easy way to keep an eye on her mom from a distance.

I'm sorry to hear your mom is struggling, Lucille. I hear a similar story from many of my readers and listeners. That's why I found a solution for you and offer it in my store. While it's called the iBaby Monitor, it actually gets used more for parents. You control the Internet-enabled camera from a distance with an iOS gadget or PC. Take a look here.

You can tilt and pan the camera, talk with your mom using the 2-way audio capability or even enable night viewing with the infrared mode. Set up motion and sound alerts to notify you if there's a crisis.

Up to four people can use one camera, so you can have others help you with the monitoring. You can control multiple cameras as well, so you aren't limited to watching one room in your mom's house.

Technology can help with many medical conditions. Here are some others that you might find interesting.

Transfer data to the new iPad

Jane of Indianapolis, IN, listens to my national radio show on WIBC 93.1 FM. After reading my coverage about the launch of the new iPad this week, she ordered a 4G version of the tablet. She wants to know how she can transfer apps and other data from her iPad 2 to the new iPad when it arrives.

You're going to love your new iPad, Jane. It was smart to pay an extra $130 for ultra-fast 4G speeds for Web browsing, streaming and downloads.

There are two ways - both easy - to transfer everything from your iPad 2 to the new iPad. If you're an iCloud user, the first step is to back up your iPad 2. Go to Settings>> iCloud>>Storage & Backup and choose Back Up Now.

When you go through Setup Assistant on the new iPad, choose Restore from iCloud Backup. After the new iPad restarts, all your settings, apps and content will appear.

You can also backup and restore with iTunes. Plug your iPad 2 into the computer and open iTunes.  It should sync automatically - click Sync if it doesn't.

After the sync is complete, unplug the iPad 2 and plug in your new iPad. Choose the Restore from Backup option. All your settings and content will be restored.

One last thing, Jane: if you have a current 3G data plan, contact your carrier for help getting your plan transferred to the new iPad.

Here are a few more ideas that will help you enjoy your new iPad.

Rookie Rundown: The start to your digital life

Organize your media collection

Andrew from Dickson, TN, listens to my national radio show on WWTN 99.7 FM. He is a media junkie with a huge collection of DVDs, CDs, Blu-rays, MP3 and video games. He wants a program to help him catalogue and organize his collection. It would be nice if it included a barcode scanner.

Sounds like quite a project, Andrew. Fortunately, there is software around that can help.

I would take a look at Data Crow. It helps you organize virtually any media type in an easy-to-use fashion.

Although it doesn't include a barcode scanner, it does link to Amazon, IMDB and other media-centric sites. Just type in the title of a movie, book or music album and Data Crow will find and fill in the information for you.

It can scan your hard drive and pull information from MP3s and video files, as well as detect your installed software for its catalogue. If you want it to do more, and you have some time and know-how, you can write new modules for non-media collections such as stamps or baseball cards.

While the program is easy to use, installing it might require a bit of extra work on some systems. You'll need to have Java installed, for example. I recommend reading through Data Crow's FAQ for more information on installing, upgrading and using the program.

If you don't mind an online solution, check out GuruLib. This online catalog system handles all your media, similar to Data Crow.

However, it can read information from a barcode scanner, if you have one. Alternatively, you can use a webcam or smartphone pictures to scan in your media.

Both services are free, so don't hesitate to test them out before you decide.

The growth of digital media makes it easier, and cheaper, than ever to build a library of content. Here are some media sources you should check out.

Find scholarship funds for your student

I've been getting a lot of questions lately about finding money for college. Tuition and other costs are rising, and family budgets are tighter than ever. In this economy, a need to find help for college has become the norm.

Many families simply can't afford to pay tuition. Yet an increasing number of students are graduating - or even walking away from college early - under a staggering weight of student-loan debt.

Before letting anyone in your house jump on the debt train, you'll want to do all you can to search for scholarships. Once again, the Internet opens that possibility.

Read on to learn the best sites for finding scholarships. I'll tell you about some little-known awards that will surprise you. >>

Killer Tip: Protect your kids on home Internet

Heavy on the technical side

Question:

I have two teenagers with Android phones that connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Also on the home network is another Android, a BlackBerry, four Windows 7 computers, an HP tablet, a Kindle Fire and a Roku box. I would like to configure my entire network to filter what sites the kids can visit. Plus, I would like a hidden log that shows what sites the kids visit and who they talk to. Yes, I sound like a total control freak, but I recently found they were messaging people I don't know and that they've never met in person. They've also been visiting some sites I don't want them to visit. I'm a programmer, so I know the value of the Internet as a tool, but I worry about my kids' safety. Please help, Kim!
-Donna in Saginaw, MI, listens to my national radio show on WSGW 790 AM.

Answer:

I don't blame you for being concerned, Donna. The Internet can be a scary place for your kids to wander. It's only natural to want to control their access to keep them safe.

Before I discuss ways to do that, I want to remind you, and all parents, to talk to your kids about Internet safety. Pretty soon your kids will be moving out and going off to college. You want to train them to make good decisions even when you're not around to monitor them.

Explain why you're concerned and why their behavior might be dangerous. Read this tip for ideas on what to discuss and how to approach the topic.

Of course, that's only one part of the solution. You do need to enforce the rules you've established. Fortunately, I can tell you how to do that.

Read on for the programs and services I recommend for keeping your kids safe online. >>

Joke:

You can always count on me to make you smile

Tim: Did you hear Apple launched "the new iPad"?
Jim: No, I didn't. What is it called?
Tim: "The new iPad."
Jim: Yes, the new iPad. What is it called?
Tim: "The new iPad!"
Jim: Exactly, I want to know what the new iPad is called!
Tim: It's "the new iPad."
Jim: Hold on. I walk into the Apple Store and I say, "Give me a new iPad." What do they give me?
Tim: "The new iPad." Of course, you can also still buy an iPad 2.
Jim: If I'm already asking for one iPad, why would I ask for an iPad too?
Tim: No, no, an iPad 2. It's the old one.
Jim: So, if I ask for a second iPad, they'd give me an old iPad?
Tim: No, it would be a new iPad 2.
Jim: So it's a new iPad.
Tim: No, it's a new iPad 2, not "the new iPad."
Jim: So, what do I ask for if I want to buy the new iPad?
Tim: "The new iPad."
Jim: Forget it! I'm buying Android!
