Do a little spring cleaning for your PC or MacNo matter how careful you are, your computer eventually becomes cluttered with digital debris. It stores your Web history, temporary files and Internet cookies, along with other random bits of information. Over time, this slows down your computer. CCleaner is a comprehensive cleaning program that will help you remove the clutter. It removes cookies, temporary files, Web history and plenty of other unwanted program-specific data. CCleaner does more than just clean, however. You can also use it to uninstall programs and modify which programs run at startup. It includes a cleaner for tackling Windows' notorious registry system. Of course, you need to be careful when messing with your registry. Fortunately, CCleaner backs up the registry before making changes. Speaking of which, I strongly recommend backing up your entire system before using CCleaner. You should be making regular backups anyway. It's especially important with any program that could possibly wipe out important files or modify your computer's performance. On Macs, CCleaner helps you run the Repair Permissions function. It can fix common problems with files and programs related to OS X. Before you begin, CCleaner lets you specify exactly what programs to scan and types of items to delete. I recommend sticking with CCleaner's default selections. If you select additional programs or items to clean, make sure you know what they are. You might accidentally remove important information, such as saved passwords in your browser. Fortunately, the latest version is smarter about what it removes. For example, it can remove unwanted cookies and leave those that you actually need for your favorite websites. The PC version will ask you about this option when you start CCleaner. On the Mac, you have to select approved websites manually under Options. Cost: Free ![]() Having perfect vision your entire life is a rarity.
