Quick Tip

Recently a reader wrote in asking about a problem when pasting pictures in MS Word:

When I do a print screen of my desktop and paste in Word, I get a blank box with dashes, yet it works perfectly when I paste in Outlook. Is there any particular reason for this?

Since systems always vary, it could be a multitude of issues but the most common reason I've run across is in the options of Word.

Basically there's a setting that will have Word load pictures as a simple placeholder.

word_example_picplchldr

Why would anyone use this?

The most common reason is to speed things up when working on a document with a lot of pictures. The scrolling is much, much faster if Word is not trying to load the pictures every time you scroll through the document.

That being said the next logical thought is to wonder how to change that setting.

As I mentioned before, it's a setting found in Word' options. Depending upon the version of Word you're running they are accessed via the Tools menu (for versions older than 2007), the Office Button (Word 2007) or the File tab of the Ribbon (Word 2010).

Once you're into the Options dialog box you'll need to locate the settings for what content Word displays – looking for a reference to picture placeholders.

In the newer versions, you'll find that in the Advanced Options / Show Document Content section.

word_pic_placeholder_option

Deselect the "Show Picture Placeholders" option and click OK.

That should do the trick – pictures should now be visible in your documents from this point forward.

Flash Drives Are GREAT - But They ALL Have One FATAL Flaw:

THEY'RE FRAGILE, SENSITIVE, & SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE ELEMENTS!

Either You Protect ALL of That Important Info You Have Stored...

OR YOU RISK LOSING ALL OF IT FOR GOOD!

Ready for the PERFECT Solution for Protection, Storage AND Portability?

We've Got It - A Neoprene Sleeve of USB Flash Drive ARMOR!

Fits Like a GLOVE -  Flexible, Strong and SECURE!

High-Quality Neoprene Gives You 100% FULL Protection!

You Can Lose...EVERYTHING...

Flash drives.  We ALL use 'em: we depend on them to store important information and documents.
And they're great - portable, small and extremely convenient!  Depending on how many gigs you like to carry around, we're talking a TON of important info stored on these things.

But ALL flash drives have one fatal flaw in common: they're brittle and susceptible to damage from shock, moisture, and a host of other things!

Kinda scary, right?  I mean, let's just say you have an entire work presentation on a flash drive.  Or a 20 page thesis paper.  Or your ENTIRE music collection - whatever. All it takes is one drop to the ground and it could be completely destroyed - taking your important documents along with it!

You know what you need, right?  You need ultimate PORTABLE PROTECTION for your flash drives - and we've got it!

Padded USB Flash Drive Cases Brought to you by Case Logic - A TRUSTED Name!

Protect that USB Flash Drive!

This is the PERFECT accessory that'll NEVER get in your way!  As you can see, these cases are almost as small as the Flash Drives they protect, and they have a nice key chain lanyard clip at the top!

This makes them absolutely ideal if you're the type of person who always carries a flash drive with them - and who doesn't these days?

Now, instead of stashing your flash drive FULL of important documents, music, pictures and everything else inside of your messy bag, or cramming it in your pocket, you can have a nice, padded case that PROTECTS your flash drive WITHOUT ever getting in your way!

Just connect it to your key chain and you'll NEVER forget to bring it with you!  Of course, don't limit yourself, either.  Some people (me included) don't want to have extra attachments to our already too bulky key chains.  You don't have to clip this on, it's just a convenient option!

The clip is also perfect for securely storing on the inside or outside of a book bag, laptop bag or purse!

YOU CAN EVEN REMOVE THE KEY RING IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO USE IT!

SOLID Neoprene Construction!

Talk about HIGH-QUALITY!  If you're not familiar with neoprene, I'll just say this now: it's the FUTURE when it comes to protective cases!  Neoprene is a soft-to-the-touch material that's flexible (can stretch) but doesn't compromise on toughness!

Try as you might, you won't be able to rip, tear or stretch neoprene out.  In fact, most of the high-end laptop cases made today are constructed of neoprene, and they go for BIG bucks! This isn't a surprise, because neoprene is the BEST quality material available in protective cases today!

So go ahead and STOP worrying about your flash drive, and get on with your busy life!  This case makes it really easy!

Ultimate Flash Drive Protection!

No matter what kind of protection you're looking for, you can get it with one of these!  It's thick padded and tough - and you can use it with 100% CONFIDENCE:

Padded Neoprene provides excellent shock resistance!
Fully enclosed case provides dust and dirt protection and keeps it out of the sun!
It's 100% PORTABLE protection that you can count on!

Two AWESOME Deals - The Choice is Yours!

Here's a deal you won't soon forget!  The choice is yours - if you're a one flash drive type person, you can get one for $4.97 with FREE US SHIPPING INCLUDED.  BUT - if you're like most people and have multiple flash drives, check this out: you can get 4 for just $10.97 also with FREE US SHIPPING Included!

Computers 101

Virginia from San Antonio, TX writes:

My laptop somehow went into the Safe Mode and I can't get out of it (the safe mode). I tried doing the F8 when it first starts up and moving down to "start normal" but it still come up in safe mode. What else can I do, other than throw the laptop away? (Its only about 2 years old) Thanks.

Before I provide the solution to your problem, let me clarify what Windows safe mode is designed for. Safe mode in Windows disables all unnecessary start-up programs, drivers, processes and starts Windows in its bare minimum configuration. When you boot Windows in safe mode, only core Microsoft processes, essential drivers and Windows services are executed.

Using safe mode, you can troubleshoot problems and application misconfigurations. If a recently installed application or a driver is behaving aberrantly, you should boot Windows in safe mode, re-install the driver/program and then boot Windows back in normal mode. Here is a brief FAQ about safe mode in Windows 7.

Now what if you get stuck in Safe mode and can't get out of it? Here is what you need to d

1. While in Safe mode, shut down windows properly. Some laptops are designed to automatically start Windows in safe mode, if you perform an improper shutdown. This includes pulling off the power cable and forcing Windows to shut down by long pressing the power button. Do a proper Windows shutdown by clicking Windows start menu and choosing shutdown, as shown below:

 Proper Windows Shutdown

If a "proper shutdown" does not help, try the following

2. In Windows 7 or Windows Vista, click "Start" and type msconfig in the search box.  If you are using Windows XP, click "Start", go to "Run", type msconfig and hit "OK".

Start Msconfig

3. In the "General" tab, check whether "Normal startup" is selected or not. if not, select "Normal startup".

Normal startup

4. Switch to the "Boot" tab and check whether the "Safeboot" option is checked or not. There is a high chance that the safeboot option will be checked, so you should uncheck it and hit OK.

Boot Config

5. Now do a proper Windows shutdown and see whether Windows boots in normal mode or boots back in safe mode.

In 99% of the cases, this should fix the issue. If it doesn't, you have no other option than to do a system restore. If you fail to restore Windows to an earlier system configuration that worked, backup all the data and perform a full system format.

Important: Do not touch the Windows bootloader or install any utility which claims to alter Windows bootloader. This is because Windows bootloader has nothing to do with safe mode and there is a chance that you might mess up your computer's current boot order.

On The Move

Jasmine asks:

I have a Kindle Keyboard and would like to add some photos, but there's no place to put them. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks for the question Jasmine. As you probably know, the "E Ink" display on the screens of Kindle versions prior to the full-color Kindle Fire–while great for reading–are not well suited for viewing photos. However, the antique styling of the Kindle stock images actually looks good on that screen so, if that's the look you're after, the display should provide a decent presentation. Although, as you point out, the Kindle 3 doesn't include a location to store personal images, but a picture folder can be created, and images can be added to the folder from a PC. It should be noted that, at least on my Kindle, the controls for viewing the pictures are slow and clunky, but they do work…eventually.

If you'd like to add images to your Kindle Keyboard, just plug it into your PC, open it, and create a new folder (see the Pictures folder below).

Definition – Abandonware

image

Abandonware, in short, is software that is no longer marketed or distributed by the company that originally created it. It is, however, usually obtainable from another source – legally, even!

Computer games are perfect examples of abandonware, and there are actually sites on the Internet that host hundreds of forgotten games of days past. Do a Google search for "abandonware" sometime and I'm sure you'll dredge up more than your fair share of outlets for old games, operating systems, applications and other memories of times gone by. Just keep in mind that a lot of those games and applications might not work 100% with newer operating systems, so you'll need to employ "Compatibility Mode" for some of them.
