A smartphone-tablet hybrid

QUESTION

I am a regular listener of your program, and a Kim's Club member. Love the show and your insight on everything digital. I am looking for a new smartphone and I notice that you are a big fan of everything Apple. But after considering the iPhone 4S, I think the size of the screen is small. I am now turning my attention to the Samsung Galaxy Note. I would really like your honest take on this device. Thanks!

Hi, Tim. Thanks for listening and being a Kim's Club member! Did you know that Kim's Club members can watch my radio show live every weekend in high-definition? You should definitely take a look!

You're right; I do talk about Apple a lot and I love my iPhone 4S. However, I respect you wanting to try out some other options. There are plenty of alternatives out there and one of those might be more your style.

The Samsung Galaxy Note is a recent release exclusive to AT&T. With its 5.3-inch screen, it's branded as half-smartphone, half-tablet. Most smartphone screens are less than 4.3 inches, while tablets are generally more than 7 inches.

It's also priced in the middle, at $300 with a two-year contract. That's a bit more than a smartphone and a bit less than a tablet.

So, how does this in-between approach work? Well, more than 5 million Galaxy Note units have shipped in the past 5 months, so someone must like it. But I'm not convinced.

Is this new gadget a smartphone or a tablet? It's actually a bit of both. I'll tell you how it stacks up against the competition. >>
