Free antivirus software for PCs and Macs

Security software is one of the first and best things to install on your computer. An unprotected Windows computer can pick up a virus on the Internet in under a minute.

Even Macs aren't immune to viruses. A recent Trojan outbreak infected more than 600,000 Macs worldwide! Learn how to detect and remove it here.

Protection doesn't have to be expensive, though. Research shows that free antivirus solutions are just as effective as paid programs. In fact, many companies offer the antivirus engine of their paid products for free. Here are some of my favorites.

Avira Free Antivirus - Avira is one of the top-rated antivirus programs. Its detection and removal engine matches or beats most paid programs.

Not only is it free, Avira has versions for both PC and Mac. You can learn one program and keep all the systems in your household safe!

Microsoft Security Essentials - This is a high-quality security program straight from Microsoft. It features top-notch malware detection and removal, and it meshes better with Windows than most other security programs.

Not only is MSE great for home use, it's one of the only free programs authorized for small business use as well.

Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition - Need a simple solution to keep your Mac safe? Sophos is a powerful, easy-to-use program. It runs automatically to keep your system safe from viruses and other malware.

Malwarebytes - No security program can detect and remove every virus out there. It pays to have a backup program you can run every once in a while.

Malwarebytes makes for a great backup malware scanner and remover. You run the free version manually, so it won't conflict with your existing security programs. And I have yet to find a virus it can't remove.

I do have one caveat: These programs are subject to some limitations. They're mostly focused on virus protection and lack spam filtering, phishing detection and a firewall. For those features, you'll need to buy the paid versions of the programs.

You can, however, use free alternatives for those features as well. Windows 7 and OS X both have built-in firewalls, for example. The Windows firewall is turned on by default. To turn on the firewall in OS X, go to System Preferences>>Security & Privacy.
