A better way to share me with your friends and family

You may notice I've added a brand new sharing bar on my site. It appears under the title of any page you visit. That's so you can easily share useful content with friends on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and by email. So, don't be selfish - share me with everyone!

Is the NSA spying on you?

QUESTION

I saw in your News of the Day newsletter that the NSA is building a huge data center to capture Internet communication. That has me worried. Can you go into more detail about what information it will store and what I can do to protect my privacy?

ANSWER

I don't blame you for worrying about your privacy, Walt. Keeping your information safe is already tough thanks to social media, search engines and online tracking systems. Now, the government is becoming involved.

The Department of Homeland Security, for example, already filters public Facebook and Twitter posts for certain keywords. If you use the words plot, Ebola, power, extremism, drugs, erosion, virus, lightning or recruitment - just to name a few - your post will probably show up on the DHS's radar.

Your best defense there is to keep your posts private. The DHS can't read what it can't see so far.
