March 23, 2012 A cellphone and walkie-talkie in one QUESTION Hi, Kim. You have a great show and I learn a lot from you, thanks! My partner and I do a lot of hiking in the country far from any cellular coverage. Is there any phone that offers 2-way walkie-talkie ability in addition to regular cellphone functions? This would save us from carrying separate devices. -John from Boulder, CO, listens to my national radio show on KHOW 630 AM. ANSWER Sounds like you have lots of fun outdoors, John. It can be great to get outside, but you always want to make sure you're safe. Fortunately, you're in luck. There is a technology that turns your cellphone into a walkie-talkie as well. Don't you wish you had this kind of walkie-talkie as a kid? The technology, commonly known as push-to-talk, was all the rage in the 90s when it was an exclusive offering from Nextel, which is now a part of Sprint. Unfortunately, the rise of the smartphone has made it harder to find phones with this feature. Fear not, though! Sprint, Verizon and AT&T all still offer phones with push-to-talk capabilities. Some prepaid companies also have phones with this service. You just have to know where to look. Read on to learn more about push-to-talk communication and how to find phones that include it. >> The opening day of baseball season is quickly approaching. Use this app to follow all of the action.
