4G cellular speed with Wi-Fi - Fri., Mar. 16, 2012

March 16, 2012 4G cellular speed with Wi-Fi QUESTION I live in a rural area and don't have DSL or cable. Instead, I use a 4G cellular modem to create a wireless hotspot at home. If I buy a Wi-Fi-only iPad, would that work with my hotspot at 4G speeds? Or do I need to buy a 4G version of the new iPad? Thank you! -Sharon from Merced, CA, watches my national radio show live with her Kim's Club membership. ANSWER Excellent question, Sharon. If you're in a 4G coverage area, you definitely want the 4G speed benefit. Your Internet will probably be faster than many households with DSL and cable. In your situation, buying a Wi-Fi-only iPad is perfectly fine. The modem you have probably uses 802.11n Wi-Fi to create your wireless hotspot. 802.11n speeds range from 150 to 300 megabits per second. The maximum speed of a 4G cellular connection, on the other hand, is 73Mbps. So, Wi-Fi definitely won't slow down your iPad's Internet speed. In fact, any gadget you connect to the network will benefit from 4G speed on your modem. Before you head to the store, read on to make sure you won't be paying too much to use your new iPad and other gadgets. >> The latest development in location-based apps is social discovery.
