Buying a webcam for tutoring

QUESTION

Hi Kim. I tutor refugees and international students who live locally, along with some math students. Now, I'm looking to expand into online teaching. However, my laptop's built-in webcam is poorly positioned to demonstrate math problems. Is there an inexpensive way to hook up a second webcam? Thanks.

ANSWER

Thanks for the excellent question, Roger, and for tuning into the show every weekend. It's great that you're lending a helping hand to immigrants and students who have fallen behind in their coursework.

There are a few paths you can take for demonstrating math problems. The easiest is to grab a decent-size dry erase board and hang it in view of your current webcam. Problem solved.

If you want to demonstrate math problems on paper, or you plan to tutor in changing environments, a new webcam is the way to go. You can easily move it around to suit your needs.
