An alternative to Apple's MobileMe

QUESTION

I have five websites for my family and other topics that I created with iWeb and host on Apple's MobileMe. The MobileMe servers are going away this June. This was a great deal, just $99 a year for unlimited sites. Is there another service that will let me post multiple sites like this? I own the domain names separately.

ANSWER

"Out with the old, in with the new" has been Apple's motto for years now. In this case, the "old" is website hosting.

Just to be clear, the iWeb editor program for OS X isn't going anywhere. It will continue to work, although Apple has discontinued technical support. Also, several features will no longer be available, such as password protection, blog and photo comments, blog search, the hit counter and the Gallery. So don't be surprised when they stop working.

What is going the way of the dinosaur is MobileMe, which will join .mac and iTools in Apple's Museum of Defunct Web Services. Apple is encouraging MobileMe users to make the transition to iCloud. Unfortunately, iCloud doesn't have its own website hosting system.

This means you'll need to save any MobileMe data currently hosted on Apple's servers. It will be lost forever on June 30th, 2012.

Apple has some useful tips for the transition, but as for finding a new way to publish your websites, Apple says you're on your own. Don't worry, though; I'm here to help.
